FAS— Free Alongside Ship(Giao dọc mạn tàu)
FAS (Free Alongside Ship) — a maritime rule: the seller delivers by placing the goods ALONGSIDE the vessel nominated by the buyer at the loading port (on the quay or a barge), export-cleared.
Cost, risk and clearance at a glance
Delivery & risk transfer
Risk passes once the goods sit alongside the ship — lifting them on board is already the buyer's risk and cost. If the vessel is late or skips the call, the waiting cargo is at the buyer's risk.
Cost split
The seller pays to bring the goods alongside and clear export; the buyer pays from there: loading on board, ocean freight, insurance if any, discharge and import clearance.
Insurance
Neither party is obliged to insure — whoever bears the transit risk should consider buying cover for that leg.
Watch out for
- FAS suits bulk or breakbulk cargo (rice, coal, steel bars…) handed over at the quay. Containers are delivered at the yard, not alongside — use FCA instead.
- For sea and inland-waterway transport only.
FAS price → Vietnamese customs value
Importing into Vietnam
- + International freight to the import gate
- + International insurance (if bought)
Exporting from Vietnam
The invoice price already sits at the valuation point — customs value = invoice price.
